DR. BREUS'S BIO:
I'm Michael Breus, and I specialize in helping people overcome what I call "disordered sleep" -- the short or long-term sleep problems that affect most of us at some point or another, and which can usually be fixed with modifications of environment and behavior.
You may have seen me talking about Colby Donaldson's visit to the sleep lab on Rachael Ray, Rosie O'Donnell's sleep apnea on The View, or sleep hygiene and bedroom makeovers on The Today Show.
Or you may have read some of my published sleep tips online at The Huffington Post or on the WebMD Sleep Disorders Blog. I'm also an AOL Wellness Coach.
In Fall 2006 my book "Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health" was published by Dutton.
ABOUT MY BOOK, "GOOD NIGHT"
Most Americans, whether they realize it or not, are sleep-deprived. Americans work more than any other country and sleep less. We feel exhausted at work, at home, and everywhere else.
Additionally, lack of a good night's sleep affects aspects of peoples' lives which they may not think to associate with sleep: relationships, sex, weight management, and physical appearance.
The truth is, sleeping enough and sleeping well can have a profound and almost immediate impact on all of those things.
In "Good Night", I address the science behind how sleep acts as nature's cosmetic medicine and dietary supplement.
Hungry all the time?
Sleep may fix that. The hormones that control hunger are regulated by sleep. The less you sleep, the hungrier you get.
Circles under your eyes? Wrinkles?
Sleep can help there too. GH (Growth Hormone) is responsible for
repairing skin, hair, and nails at the cellular level -- while we
sleep. The deeper you sleep, the better your body fixes itself --
improving your appearance and helping you look younger.
In the book, I outline a 100% natural, easy to follow behavioral program that shows you how to identify your sleep issues and create a custom plan of action for addressing them. Following this program for 4 weeks will let you see, first-hand, the impact a proper sleep regimen can have on how you look and feel.
AN EXCERPT FROM "GOOD NIGHT":
"Imagine that you're hiking on a trail through some tough elements -- rain, rocks, mud, and lots of brush and trees. You get a cut on your leg, and then your shoelaces loosen. How hard would it be to continue walking and attempt to tend to your cut and shoelaces at the same time? Pretty hard. My guess is it would take a long time for the bleeding to stop and you would risk injuring yourself further. It would be nearly impossible to retie your laces while even moving at a slower pace.
"Now think of making a brief stop to care for the cut and retie your laces snugly. You get back to hiking quickly, your cut begins the healing process, and you probably hike stronger.
"The same scenario applies to sleep. During the day you expose your body to a host of elements, such as stress and UV rays, all of which contribute to the aging process. These are the rocks and brush your body endures day in and day out on its own 'life trail'. Sleep is the time-out your body requires to make necessary cellular repairs and zone in on restoring itself from the inside out.
"Deep sleep in particular becomes your own private operating room for all those nips and tucks that should naturally occur from within you. This is when your skin repairs itself, grows new cells, and fortifies its defenses against moisture loss and free radical damage (those loose cannons in the body that accelerate aging and can cause disease). Many cells also increase production of proteins (while decreasing breakdown) during this time, which in turn become the building blocks needed for cell growth and for repair of damage. And this is exactly why deep sleep may truly be 'beauty sleep'."
