I don't sleep well, but I have definitely noticed that exercising after work helps me sleep better that night. It's hard for me to get the energy to do it, and sometimes I'll only get around to working out once or twice a week, but I have noticed that it really does benefit my sleep. If only I could make myself get to the gym more often!

I have actually heard this before and of course, if someone is physically tired, their body will cause them to require rest. However, one problem I sometimes face is waking up through the night at different times. Just was wondering why. I will keep reading this blog.

I also find that if I exercise during the day I sleep better at night. It's very important to exercise regularly to keep your heart in good shape as well as benefit your night's sleep. Everyone can find some time during the day to exercise, even if it's just to walk to the shops instead of taking the car or setting aside 10 minutes to walk round the block or over the park.

I've found a great way to deal with my insomnia is to make a blog. That way if I can't sleep or wake up in the middle of the night, there's always something to do before being able to sleep. You can check out mine at http://anatomyofinsomnia.blogspot.com/

I have found exercise at almost any time of day dramatically improves my sleep. It is true exercising in the evening, say after 6pm, can exacerbate my insomnia. I think this is because I have trouble moderating my body temperature so soon after exercise. However, an afternoon jog (or even in the morning)really only helps as I am able to fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly. When I do exercise at night, after work I usually take a natural sleep remedy called Dream Supply from www.goodelements.com which helps me to fall asleep and then the exercise makes my rest more restorative.

In my experience of treating insomnia it varies from individual to individual. Some of my clients can exercise until 9pm and not be effected whilst others become wired if they do anything after 4pm. My advise is get to know youself by going out for training sessions at different times of the day and seeing which ones affect your sleep the most. The most important thing is that you are getting in some form of exercise has it has a positive effect on the depth and quality of your sleep if done at the right time for your body.

Wishing you the best of sleep,

Dr. Guy Meadows
